COVID-19 (Coronavirus) reported illnesses range from mild symptoms to severe illness and death. The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.
Most common symptoms:
- Fever or chills
Less common symptoms:
- Body Aches and pains (Muscle pain)
- Sore throat
- Nausea or vomiting
- Congestion or runny nose
- Loss of taste or smell
- A rash on skin or discoloration of fingers and toes
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 (Conoravirus) seek immediate medical attention.
Emergency warning signs include:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
- New confusion
- Inability to wake or stay awake
- Loss of speech or movement
- Bluish lips or face
This list is not all possible symptoms. Please contact your medical provider for any or other symptoms that are severe and concerning to you.
On average it takes 5-6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days. Some people may be asymptomatic and never show any of the symptoms, and they would be contagious.
There is currently no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus (COVID-19). The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
- Between people who are in close contact with one another (about 6 feet).
- Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
- These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
- Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing any symptoms.
Take steps to protect yourself:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public space, or blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Plus, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people that are sick. Practice Social Distancing. Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting sick, including older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease.
Take Steps to protect others:
- Stay at home if you are sick or do not feel well, except when seeking medical care.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes.
- It is recommended to wear a face covering (face mask) when in public, around others or in large group gatherings. Wear the face covering whether you feel sick or not.
Clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched daily.
